Job Description During the summer of 2018, I interned at Berryessa Dental as a receptionist. My daily tasks included communication with clients, scheduling appointments through spreadsheets, and opening up/closing the facility.
Log 1 - June 25th to June 29th (20 hours) Fortunately, I was able to complete my 20 hour internship within a one week window. During my time at the dental office, I was tasked with basic activities commonly assigned to the receptionists. At 8:00 AM on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday, I unlocked the back door and unarmed the alerting alarm. Before the office could officially open up for business, I had to open up all blinds, flip a substantial amount of light switches, assess the cleanliness of the facility, and finally, flip over the close sign so it displayed, “Open”. On the first day of the internship, I was taught the systems and programs practiced at the establishment. This included using spreadsheets to schedule appointments, using “professional” language to speak with clients, and various office keeping activities. There was definitely a learning curve that had to be overcame when communicating with clients over the phone/in person, but I was able to focus and complete the tasks. During the second day, I mainly sat behind the receptionist counter and greeted/assisted clients. Sometimes I found myself casually conversing with those in the waiting room and meeting individuals whom I would have never come across. As a quick learner, I was able to calmly deal with stressful situations whilst practicing the systems implemented by the business. As the third day commenced, I was given a task that pertained to filing paperwork of completed operations. Though this was not my favorite moment, I came to appreciate the patience and organizational skills that receptionists must practice in order to effectively complete their job. I continued to converse with various clients and scheduled appointments. As 6 PM arose, I found myself locking doors, closing blinds, flipping light switches, turning the “open” sign to “close”, and exiting the front door. |

June 27, 2018 - 8 Hours - Unpaid June 29, 2018 - 8 Hours - Unpaid Closing Report Though short, this internship experience was definitely sweet. I was able to experience the perspective of a dental receptionist whilst working in my desired future career environment. Though the tasks were sometimes minuscule, I am glad that I contributed to an establishment that improves the health of their community. I hope to take these management traits and utilize them when I become a future dentist!
